Welcome to my blog. I post on this, roughly once a week (it does vary). I sustained a 'Traumatic Acquired Brain Injury', and a six month coma from a 'road traffic accident' whilst cycling, in October 2006. I spent the following 4 years (22-26yrs old), in a combination of hospitals and rehabilitation homes. Now, I have been living independently in Surbiton, England since October 2010. This blog begun life in December 2010, as i realised that there are many people worldwide that i want to share experiences with. I know that, as a wheelchair user, I am obviously not as mobile as i wish, so, use the internet to connect to you. I enjoy letting my thoughts represent through type. I type honestly. As numerous readers, as well as email recipients, will understand, I find typing to be very therapeutic. Thank you :)

determination

Next week...

I am standing for the Green Party in St Mark’s electoral ward (central Surbiton area), for the Royal Borough of Kingston’s ‘Local Council Elections’. As a ‘Kingston Green Party’ we are targeting our focus on two wards in the borough, Canbury with Joe Holder, and ‘Chessington North and Hook’ with Simon Jakeman. We have grown, and are showing our strength by providing electoral candidates throughout the largest area in history, covering almost all wards in the borough. Our key, Election Officer, Tariq Shabbeer, describes briefly our mission statement, at an Election Hustings, yesterday...

Choose your music. Don’t let ‘shuffle’ choose for you!
I have only just recently, rediscovered this belief. I admit that I had slipped. I remember warning of the danger of ‘shuffle’, as a mode of playing your music. Truthfully, lazy idleness, caught me. It may seem easier to just press ‘play’, but one’s experience is enhanced for much longer, by choosing which album to listen to. Not only do you get the joy of the music, but you can anticipate what track is next, and you can review the experience during the silence at the end! Special. Silence is magical.

Record Store Day, was alerted to me by BBC 6music. Simon Pegg, explained the value of his ‘In Rainbows’, on 6music Instagram.
Two vinyl records. Personally, I don’t have a record player, but I have digital versions, and I hold these items so close to me. My two favourite artists, from my teenage years, and onwards, evermore. I have digital versions of the music now, but originally all tunes were owned on Compact-Disc. ‘In Rainbows’ was bought as a ‘vinyl package’, containing CDs. One ‘B-side’ of Jeff Buckley’s, ‘Last Goodbye’ is not in my collection, in any other format but I did play the record once!

Finally, a leader, President Emmanuel Macron, standing up to Donald Trump!
‘Macron audaciously borrowed Donald Trump's Make America Great Again slogan to talk about the environment, and the importance of the climate change agreement the US has pulled out of. He said it was time to make the Earth great again.’
Macron on environment: "There is no planet B" -

I am a graduate in Design, for ‘Visual Communication’, as well as ‘Industrial Design and Technology’. I often claim that my lonesome determination came from my history as a cyclist. Fortunately I remember that, at university, all students on my course were praised and adjudged to be graduating in ‘Problem-Solving’! This is how design students are educated, throughout. We were taught to open our minds, and create solutions to problems. I remember that we were quite overwhelmed by this, but knew that it was true. A key, is to approach the problem in entirely new way.
Now (or for the past 7.5 years), I find myself calling on these skills, everyday. When combined with determination, I never feel overwhelmed by any task that i face. If it is possible, it can be done. If it is impossible,  accept this, but look at the problem from a different view. Why is it impossible? Break it down, continuously, and realise that much can be solved. Perhaps there is a small, impossible element. But it is easier to overcome, by varying the route through, or around the problem.

Time after time, after time…
I am told that i should looking for girls in wheelchairs!
Erm…
!!! ...?
(i guess that I obviously do not qualify as a ‘normal’. ’Normal’ people do not require wheelchairs.)
I WILL NOT BE DEFINED BY MY WHEELCHAIR
No-one is ‘normal’.

Alone forever (independent forever)?

It is when troubled by this possibility, I have to play ‘my wildcard’. I am lucky for anything. I am lucky to be here at all. I am allowed to hope, but cannot expect. As with many other aspects of life, I can really hope, or dream, but reality is harsher. I may always have to deal with this, but I have experience!

for yourself

If you are reading this on a mobile phone, i urge you to use the following link to read the explanatory introduction (including my accident of 2006, and following years), and a couple of intro posts from the early life of this blog ...

I recognise that many of you may still be ignorant of my ‘ICS Blogspot’.

It helps prove my love for coffee, promoting 20 Independent Coffee Shops around the South-West arc of London, including central London.

I guessed correctly
I would like to say my ‘experience’ has helped me, but, truthfully a combination of guesswork and mathematics were successful. I won!!!!! Yipee!!!!!!!! :)
WagsAndTales,Surbiton... How many coffee beans in the cup?

My Monday morning was free! The Neuro-Gym that I attend was in the process of re-location.
Monday, no gym, so...
:)
I felt guilty, missing my exercise that day, so set myself a new target. Instead of cycling on my ‘MotoMED gym-bike’, for a ten-minute sprint, I increased the duration. I knew that I have been comfortable pushing myself for ten-minutes, had time spare, so I trebled it. Half an hour! I had power left near the end, so went for a 99% sprint for the final five minutes! I finished well, not too tired. Job done. Satisfied!

I have had an iPhone 6+ for over a couple of years, and I have found that my battery is running out quicker than before…
Investigation, in my ’Settings’ tells  me..
Although rechargeable power, the ‘Battery health’ has deteriorated to 82% of original 100%. Plenty, but it will continue to decrease. I want to slow the decrease, as much as possible.
This problem will, at some point, affect all users, so...

‘Low Power Mode’ (suggested as a safety net)
… Introduced with iOS 9, Low Power Mode is an easy way to extend the battery life of your iPhone when it starts to get low. Your iPhone lets you know when your battery level goes down to 20%, and again at 10%, and lets you turn on Low Power Mode with one tap. Or you can enable it by going to Settings > Battery. Low Power Mode reduces display brightness, optimizes device performance, and minimizes system animations. Apps including Mail will not download content in the background, and features like AirDrop, iCloud sync, and Continuity will be disabled. You can still use key functions like making and receiving phone calls, email, and messages, accessing the Internet, and more. And when your phone charges up again, Low Power Mode automatically switches off.
&
Reduce display ‘Brightness’
This is the answer I am relying on now. By sliding upwards, on the ‘home screen’, above settings can be adjusted. The ‘Brightness Level’ bar, can be decreased, saving a lot of power (see above).

George Monbiot provides essential reading for EVERYONE.
In his book ‘How Did We Get Into This Mess?’, Monbiot is potentially, the ultimate whistleblower on much of the outrageous behaviour of those with power.
I cannot recommend this book enough!

Please vote for yourself. You have an opinion. If you don’t vote, you are letting those in power, back in, and nothing will change!

In the words of Baroness Jenny Jones, the sad state of current politics are explained…
‘If you don’t have a Green in the room, these problems aren’t discussed.’

‘There is no such thing as constant growth.’
Certain Politicians sometimes behave so greedily, without a care in the world. Naively, they fail to understand that expansion must finish somewhere.

I found this YouTube clip yesterday, so I have yet to watch it fully. The first four strums of guitar, introducing the opening track, hooked me. The song is over 20 years old, but then again I am 33!
I will say no more, but I share it for you.

Thank you Arsene. Big news today. My favourite football team has been led by the finest manager that football has ever seen, for more than half of my life. He had written to me personally, following my accident, providing so much encouragement and self-belief that I needed. Professionally, he achieved a goal that I don’t believe will ever be replicated. Now he has announced his retirement. He has always, and will always deserve total respect from everyone!

Power Crazy

If you are reading this on a mobile phone, i urge you to use the following link to read the explanatory introduction (including my accident of 2006, and following years), and a couple of intro posts from the life of this blog (7yrs5m)...

The Green Party, is about making the FAIR AND CORRECT decisions for all.  One prominent issue, is that everyone needs Earth's unique climate, therefore it is ESSENTIAL that this always takes priority.

I have a new case for my iPhone. I wanted to step away from plastics. There must be plenty of suitable materials other than a polymer compound?
I find one. Wood.

A German based company, ‘Kalibri’, has taken this ‘alternative approach’. My new case is a compound. Real, natural wood feel and look, but I believe that it must involve a polymer/plastic somehow. My opinion is that if a plastic polymer is not essential, then why use it?
I must be careful though. I do not want to promote them too much, because they also produce ‘leather mobile-phone cases’. They seem to offer designs, using the two extremes, of the ‘ethical scale’.

My cup

‘You’re obviously a man who takes his coffee seriously. I like it!’
Hehehe. Finally, I received  a welcome comment, regarding my use of my own espresso cup in a Coffee shop!  Often, I am looked upon, very strangely. People probably see the wheelchair, then my request for my cup to be used, and get very, very confused, or presume that I NEED  a special cup. No (I remember requiring such, about 10 years ago), I just NEED good coffee!.

Climate change uncertainty...
What will happen first?
A - Humans run out of Fossil-Fuels. No power available to sustain Human life.
Or...
B - Humans’ behaviour continues, increasing Global temperatures, resulting in more ‘Global disasters’, until we have nothing left.

Solutions:
1 - Build a big wall protecting us from ‘Global Disasters’ (Trump-style)
or, our only real option...
2 - Research and develop sustainable power generation

Power crazy
Continued excavation of our Earth, to find more fossil fuels, is a finite process. By using them, we lose them, forever. Obviously, the most positive solution is generation of renewable power. Unfortunately, everyone wants to dismiss any possibility that these clean energies alone, will provide us enough.

I urge everyone to open their eyes, and view humans’ only other solution to the ’power-loss’ fear, without ‘corporate blinkers’ which narrow our vision down to apocalyptic failure. We cannot burn ourselves forever, we need to think sustainably, but we do know of a second alternative whose negative impact has been blown out of proportion due to human greed and therefore monstrously, humongous disaster. There are both tremendously positive aspects of success, but also devastatingly tragic examples of failure.  George Monbiot explains…

George Monbiot 'How did we get into this mess?' pg155

Personally, I believe that we must increase Global Research and Development of Sustainable Power Generation, we MUST STOP EATING OURSELVES. There are greedy humans among us, but we have to work together and focus on the goal that humans need too reach.

I take it home!
I felt furious, but i couldn’t be cross because they had kept my espresso-cup safe (i had accidentally left it behind)!

I have since been assured that the plastic water-cups are recycled (supposedly). Customers are not told to ‘recycle plastic cups’ (the recycling bin is hidden away ‘apparently’)! I am highly suspicious. Their toilet light is left constantly on!
Infuriating that such basic 'sustainability ethics' are completely ignored.

High-Street vendors surely would benefit sincerely, by advertising an ethical approach. Those that do not, should suffer compared to competitors. The government should introduce laws, improving the ethical consumption of society. Unfortunately, many will disagree with me, but sometimes people just ‘have to bite the bullet’, or even worse consequences await.

Currently, I always eat scrambled egg on toast, for lunch on Monday (WagsNTales, Surbiton). Partly because it is on my way home from the ‘NeuroGym’. However it is partly due to the fact that I have to remind myself that I am disabled, and I AM DIFFERENT. This fact is only viewed as a positive by me. It shows me how used to ‘disabled life’ (22+....), I have become. I used to feel such pain by my differences, but not so much now. Time heals, I guess. I can also recognise my improvements. Obviously, I have an audience who cannot know, or understand anything about me. I find power in this!

Brad Pitt and Jimmy Page explain the magic of the late Jeff Buckley.
A worthy tribute…
Mind-blowing

Cause/Effect

A longer post, make yourself comfy!...

Twenty years ago, I was only 13.
It is 2018. Twenty years ago, a massive year for my sporting heroes, 1998.  Michele Bartoli simply stunned me in April as he won Liege-Bastogne-Liege, and fast became my favourite cyclist. The ASICS rider then wore the leaders’ jersey throughout much of the Giro D’Italia in May. This three-week Grand Tour was a supreme stage race with overall victory for Marco Pantani (another hero of mine, since his early, ‘Team Carrera’ days).
May, Wembley, FA Cup final was won by my team Arsenal. Marc Overmars goal was added to by Nicolas Anelka as Arsenal completed yet another ‘Double’, beating Newcastle at Wembley.
The following month, the World Cup in France. I didn’t attend, but was able to watch all key matches on TV. I decided that my team to support was that of the home nation. I had the ASICS team cycling jersey, the Arsenal away shirt (‘Vieira’ on the back), and so I also bought the French national shirt before the tournament start.

Six years later, I met my hero, who signed my '98 jersey. It has remained framed ever-since!

No-one is allowed to know why Brazil and Ronaldo delayed kick-off of the biggest game in the world (World Cup Final). Patrick Vieira provided a sublime assist for Arsenal team-mate Emmanuel Petit, to score midway through the match. France won 3-0! Trois, zero.
French riders of the Tour de France celebrated as they watched the final on TV in hotel, near the beginning of ‘the end’.
Team doctor of ‘Team Festina’ Willy Voet, was caught travelling through the Belgian border, with an extreme amount of Performance-Enhancing Drugs. A calamitous disaster. The Tour continued on, determined to finish, like the Giro, won by hero Marco Pantani. I wanted to turn my head but soon realised that ANYONE, ANYWHERE, in ANY SPORT could cheat. From such a high (my sporting heroes were victorious everywhere), I fell to such a low. I was able to recognise that my teenage heroes were built on flaws.
Everyone knows of the problems in Cycling. People may know of problems in Athletics, Tennis and many more sports. However people really do not accept that similar competitive mentalities exist in Football. There is much more money involved, but does this clean all competitors’ mentalities?
TWENTY years on, players’ health safety is always still an extreme priority, but no-one is prepared to investigate properly...
:S

Kingston Green Party newsletters

I designed the latest ‘Kingston Green Party Newsletters’, focussed on two key wards in the upcoming Local Elections (May 3rd). We have two outstanding candidates, whose possibilities of success are prime. We are standing candidates in almost all wards in Kingston, all of whom are offering positive, progressive principles. It is in ‘Canbury Ward’ and ‘Chessington North & Hook’ that we have a strong history of challenging closely, the Conservatives or LibDems. We believe that Kingston cannot continue being weak enough to accept conditions under their virtual monopoly.

...Back to my music. Recent additions to my collection, are offered below.

Last week Jack White released his new solo album, ‘Boarding House Reach’. Unfortunately, I had no time to listen to it fully, before last week’s post was written.

Jack White
Boarding House Reach
Jack White has released a truly eclectic album of tunes and sounds that rock. Famed as a supreme guitarist, the album can be seen as veering away from this classic ‘rock guitar’ essence. Melodies may have been written on a guitar, however these rock sounds are actually provided through various electronic and digital instruments, it seems.
Wow. A serious lack of a guitar used, but still ‘rockin’! I struggle to listen without bewilderment, amazed by the ‘rock essence’ he holds, yet without a guitar! Impressive, very impressive.

Second artist promoted this week, is a favourite. Marissa has previously appeared on this blog, a few times. She has released a second album of covers in consecutive years (http://patrickgoodacre.blogspot.co.uk/2017/12/bounce-back.html). Below I list artists of the 10 originals, that she has covered on this year’s release.

I have just realised that, unintentionally, it is the second week in a row, I provide a cover song of the superb Leonard Cohen!

Bauhaus staircase

Dated at 1932, this ‘Bauhaus Staircase’ photograph, emphasises the beauty of the ‘Modernist, Art-Deco’ period.
Sorry to blurb on about a passion, again, as always on MY blog…
I love this photo, because it can be viewed in two respects. One can recognise the fact it has a 3D form (and is a staircase), or one can easily, visually ‘flatten it’, resulting in a graphical masterpiece, offering no depth to itself at all, just solid blocks of primary colours, on top of minimal black and whites tones.

On May 3rd, you have 3 votes. Have a Green voice.

‘Performance’ of this blog essentially means nothing, however it provides me with great joy, that people across the world, listen to my thoughts!

It is the ‘Hell of the North’ on Sunday. Paris-Roubaix races across cobbled lanes of Northern France. A fan, I follow ‘Trek Segafredo’ on Instagram. They have visited the treacherous parcours in training...

Everything is a contrast
A contrast is everything
There is always an equal and opposite possibility of everything. Realise this. Without it, you have nothing. We must welcome contrast, but always use it wisely. Harsh contrasts of anything always have alarming results!
Without white, there is no black
Without black, there is no white

Inside one of my favourite, in Central London.
It was close.
A tight gap.
They shuffled past.
He got distracted, then entangled with a shelf.
As she followed, she spun her bag around,
I SAVED MY COFFEE!
I am quite proud of quick reactions (when necessary)!

Cause/Effect
I cannot expect things anymore.
What can I look forward to?
Everywhere has accessibility issues of some level. Nothing is ever certain, therefore I am having to learn to expect nothing. Unfortunately my brain has been very much wired, as a designer. I was taught that things happen, or exist because of a ‘cause’. However, I unfortunately know oh so well, that, sh*t happens. These two conflicting messages are colliding in the hallways of my mind. There is no winner, resulting in my mind always doubting itself. As much as I want to believe in ‘cause/effect’ situations, I know that essentially fate and nature is the law.
