Welcome to my blog. It varies how regular I write posts here. I sustained a 'Traumatic Acquired Brain Injury', and a six month coma from a 'road traffic accident' whilst cycling, in October 2006. I spent the following 4 years (22-26yrs old), in a combination of hospitals and rehabilitation homes. Now, I have been living independently in Surbiton, England since October 2010. This blog begun life in December 2010, as i realised that there are many people worldwide that i want to share experiences with. I know that, as a wheelchair user, I am obviously not as mobile as i wish, so, use the internet to connect to you. I enjoy letting my thoughts represent through type. I type honestly. As numerous readers, as well as email recipients, will understand, I find typing to be very therapeutic. Thank you :)

blurred

'This is the next century...'

My mind was blurred. I knew that I was damaged, but in a hospital, recovering. Awakening from a comatose state was a long, steady process. Once I could recognise myself as conscious, a couple of thoughts alarmed me! Initial thoughts, after awakening fully, in hospital from my comatose state…

  • I remember laying in my hospital bed, having been told that I had just been asleep, comatose for the last six months.
  • My initial panic was that ...’I must have lost a lot of my fitness’, I doubted that I would be the same speed cycling up ’those’ climbs! Low weight, and ‘tactically astute’ (i like to think), I was regularly feared opposition, ascending. Fast flats, were my problematic terrains (I was a flyweight climber, who struggled on windy, flat landscapes).
  • No more Alpine climbs this year.
  • Aerobic fitness was key… But I had just been told that i had been asleep for SIX MONTHS!
  • Oh, and you can’t walk!!…
….
  • …Oh dear,
  • Hmmm
  • Sh*t happens
  • Oh well, it doesn’t matter that i’ve lost fitness, THIS IS A SERIOUS PROBLEM. People will never believe me, but I knew at some point, cycling would do something like such, to me.
  • I know people will doubt what I can teach myself to achieve, but only I know myself.
  • It’s gonna' take time, but i will surprise people. That is my mission.
  • Things are already better than yesterday. As long as i keep improving, things get better! I am lucky, I feel exactly the same person as ever. I must keep a level mind. I had always feared a serious injury awaited me. Cycling was too good to me, a negative strike was due.

I have yet to research this act, but the soft, celtic vocals are mesmerisingly beautiful...

CHVRCHES live 4 song acoustic performance - full show 2018

OK, WARNING!!! Mistake made. I love the ‘acoustic performance’ above, but the album is nothing like this!
They are a pop-band…
New album ‘Love is Dead’, released 2018, is full of pop/dance music.

Hansa Session EP’ (pictured below) released mid-November 2018, is much better (IMO)!!!

How to take a free kick... (an amazing countdown of 25 gems)...

  • I have little option but to consider EVERYTHING as a bonus. I will not allow myself to feel negative, because I have to remember that I am ridiculously lucky to be here at all (we all are).
  • I get frustrated with issues, but I then step back. It may be unfortunate to be feeling such a way, but I am soooo lucky to be able to feel like such.
  • Let your life continue on. You never know what awaits you around the next corner.

January 2017 was the first month of my blog’s boom (that lasted into summer).

WHY AM I GREEN?
Many of you may have thought that results of the recent RBK Local-Elections would have thrown me off-track. Instead, I welcomed the experience of standing. I am very glad that I did so. I copy some key text from the link above, that explains my/our beliefs...

  • I knew that 2015 was a year, for me, to get involved. I did not know which political party to join…
  • Conservatives were the leading party in power, things needed a change. I have never agreed with their right-wing policies. Most of Britain does. This was/still is the problem. Most people seemed to be closing their ears to problems of others. People are led by the ‘propaganda’ they see in the news, or read in the newspapers. Readers will always consider what they read as ’neutral’. I just look at the front pages of the highly-popular tabloid papers, and i cry inside. Their stories are read as 'national news' by Britons. British people are showing such mental weakness, we allow ourselves to be sold these racist, hate-mongering stories. We are sensible, level-headed people so, we get wounded and made to feel a combination of hatred and vengefulness, at hearing of such 'news' stories. I have since realised that these ’newspaper/comics’ are bought by a certain group of people. Not all, but many of a higher age… 65+… These are the people who vote!
  • Do younger people not care? We do, but we are letting our futures to be ruled by those of the past.
  • These elderly voters may not fear what will happen in the future, 'our years', not 'their's'.
  • It hurts me that there are very few of us, who feel as lucky as myself to be here. We are all unbelievably lucky, even those who have left us, are lucky to have experienced life on this planet. We owe humanity and our planet, so much.
  • Humanity must exist in the future, for as long as possible. We owe it to the future.
  • We risk to be reviewed as part of the ’21st Century Human Race’ who failed. Our desire and greed killed us.
  • I DO NOT WANT THAT

  • I was quick to understand that the Green Party stands for so much more than just 'climate-change', 'recycling', and the 'environment'.
  • It offends me when i hear friends talk about 'the Green Party', and 'recycling' as if they are two unique entities bonded together, and nothing else is even considered! The Party so much deeper than caring about one issue alone.
  • Whilst recycling is a core part of the general belief preached, many, many more topics are discussed and problems tackled. 'Recycling' is such an almighty phenomenon, every political party understands it's importance. Some ignore, and some political parties are more active in regards of the topic, than others.
  • The Green Party, correctly uses true utilitarian politics, with best, positive results, for as many as possible. They do not allow for successes of one group of people, over another. I completely ally with this basic concept. It does scare me that the majority of our population does not follow this belief! Other parties make selections of 'favourite groups', often trying to increase their privilige at the cost of others. Are we not beyond this, in the 21st Century? The Human race needs to work together.
  • A true democracy should no longer be a two-horse race. If you support the idea of a democracy, vote for what you believe in. Please show the power of your own mind. Don't feel trapped by just the two or three old parties, this is a new Century!

I sat reading a book in the hospital reception, on Tuesday after my appointment, awaiting hospital-transport to return home. I can recognise that people get annoyed and frustrated by being forced to wait. However, I looked around and knew that hospitals are special, magical places. Everyone, essentially respects all staff, whom are all there to provide invaluable service. It is frustrating, because all patients know that they should not be there. Their only reason is because of themselves.
Having spent part of life in hospital helps me partly recognise the sheer effort and work levels offered by staff involved.
PRICELESS
Thank you.

Watch your central heating level!
It is winter and many of us will be turning on central-heating more, and more, regardless of actual temperature!
I left the gym early, on Wednesday, as i was seriously over-heating. Such negligence offended me.
IF YOU DON’T NEED, DON’T USE!

We can progress further!

- Speaking the truth --
- Nothing yet --
- Strange noises --

Mission successful. I had crouched down by the side of the road in the Alps.
'G'WANNN DAVID!!'
The  photograph that I took of my hero David Millar, climbing up to La Toussuire in 2006 Tour de France.

A super interview, originally linked through the ’London Real’ website, in a post here, from a couple of weeks ago, can now be watched through YouTube.
A super interview, because David Millar is such an honest and direct bloke, with a supreme love of professional cycling. He is vastly experienced and is in no way scared of speaking the truth

Respect.
David Millar - London Real

OK, England won!.. No, we finished top of our group.
What did we win?... Nothing yet, but we can progress further!

...UEFA Nations League

... What is the basic format?

  • The format of the UEFA Nations League features promotion and relegation. The 55 European national teams have been divided into four leagues in accordance with UEFA's national association coefficient rankings on 11 October 2017.

  • League A includes the top-ranked sides and League D includes the lowest:

League A
Group A1: Germany, France, Netherlands
Group A2: Belgium, Switzerland, Iceland
Group A3: Portugal, Italy, Poland
Group A4: Spain, England, Croatia

  • Teams have been split into four groups of three, with the group winners then contesting the UEFA Nations League Finals (semi-finals, third-place match and final) in June 2019 to become the UEFA Nations League winners. One host country will be appointed in December 2018 from among the finalist teams.
  • The four teams that finish bottom of their groups will be relegated to League B for the 2020 edition.
  • The top four ranked teams that do not qualify for UEFA EURO 2020 will enter a play-off in March 2020, with one finals place on offer.
_________________________________________________________________________________

League B
Group B1: Slovakia, Ukraine, Czech Republic
Group B2: Russia, Sweden, Turkey
Group B3: Austria, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Northern Ireland
Group B4: Wales, Republic of Ireland, Denmark
_________________________________________________________________________________

League C

Group C1: Scotland, Albania, Israel
Group C2: Hungary, Greece, Finland, Estonia
Group C3: Slovenia, Norway, Bulgaria, Cyprus
Group C4: Romania, Serbia, Montenegro, Lithuania

  • Teams have been split into one group of three (containing teams from Pots 1, 2 and 3 only) and three groups of four.
________________________________________________________________________________

League D
Group D1: Georgia, Latvia, Kazakhstan, Andorra
Group D2: Belarus, Luxembourg, Moldova, San Marino
Group D3: Azerbaijan, Faroe Islands, Malta, Kosovo
Group D4: FYR Macedonia, Armenia, Liechtenstein, Gibraltar

  • Leagues A and B consist of four groups of three teams
  • League C comprises one group of three teams and three groups of four sides
  • League D is formed by four groups of four teams
  • The League Phase Draw for the UEFA Nations League took place at the SwissTech Convention Centre in Lausanne on 24 January 2018.
  • In each league, four group winners are promoted (or play in the Finals) and four teams are relegated for the next competition to be played in 2020.
  • The overall UEFA Nations League rankings will determine the composition of the draw pots for the subsequent European Qualifiers.
In addition, the UEFA Nations League will provide teams with another chance to qualify for the UEFA EURO final tournament, with four sides qualifying through play-off matches which take place in March 2020 .

I am English, England will always be ‘my team’.
I am a strong lover of  ‘gli azzurri’ (Italia), and a fan of ‘les bleus’ (France). I hope that I have a team to support!

Giorgio Chiellini - Classiest and best defender in the world (in my opinion)
'Giorgio', My Bialetti - Alpina Moka has been named after the star (also ‘born’ on August 14th)!

OK. I am embarrassed by the following note...
(Noisy) WinterPB in gym
Psychology of a keen cyclist
I had a target on the gym-bike, in the ‘YourHealthcare/NHS’ NeuroGym. I had reached this goal last week, so raised the bar higher, increasing the target this week. There were less users in the Gym this Monday, because of public-transport delays. Therefore more time was spent setting up, on the gym-bike. A couple of sprint-bursts (of about 45seconds), allowed me to set up my position for max-output. Then a 10 minute sprint involved me making strange noises at a max effort - 100% focus! Embarrassing but a ...
Success!! :)
____Next week?

Go Geraint!!

‘G’ deserves such incredible respect, for targeting a successive Tour de France victory, in 2019.
‘Thomas suggested that a second Tour de France victory would be an even greater achievement than his maiden victory. "If you look in the history books, the last man to retain it after winning it for the first time was (Miguel) Indurain, back in 1991-92. So it kind of shows how rare that is," Thomas said.

The whole station, of BBC 6Music is such a wonderful fountain of new music. Introducing new sounds to me, so regularly.
All are brilliant, but one DJ who stands out for me, is Marc Riley. Applicable everywhere, there are songs i dislike, or cannot feel an attraction to, but he always seems to play absolute gems, often hidden in his evening show!
Thank you Marc!

The following artist was introduced to me, on his show, last week...

Whatever happens...

- Key attributes
- More to love
- Public humiliation

...Whatever occurs, is supposed to occur.
Humanity will never truly know why, because we are not supposed to know why.

Six key attributes...
All are linked, but separate too.
I believe that I am fortunate enough to be able to rely on six key, psychological attributes…

Determination. Be aware of, or be confident in knowing, what is rationally possible. Once identified, set it as a target. We know that it is possible, therefore we know that persistence will succeed!

Individuality. Everyone is different. Everyone will use different mental pathways, to solve a problem. Be proud. No-one else can work your brain!

Self-belief. Only you, truly know yourself. People may be very close, but only you know what you are capable of. Maintain this belief, only you can, only you know how.

Self-confidence. Partly linked to your self-belief, but these are the results, and how you use them. Look at your self-beliefs (you do have plenty, if you dig deep). Use these elements but maintain knowledge of restricting their use (always have keep some spare).

Creative thinking. Always maintain the knowledge that you can be creative. If faced with any sort of problem, your mind will naturally attempt to create a solution. Consider what you have done. Be confident in your ability to create solutions. Nothing is impossible.

Logical rationality. Keep your feet on the ground. Recognise that you are able to consider issues rationally, with logic. Whether we accept this, or not, we can all think rationally, else we wouldn't be here.

All six were developed together, and used during my design education. I have been able to rely on all six when cycling (even creatively-thinking, when feeling strong enough)!

A recent song from Electronic-Dance legends...

  • I am a Graphic Designer, but I have a heart too. It saddens me when I open my mailbox, and it is filled with ****.  Instant rubbish
  • It troubles me when I design something, that I realise what may happen to it. Work, must be sustainably produced. Recyclable material is a MUST.
  • Oh, how it angers me when I discover PLASTIC incorporated in a flyer which is just instantaneous rubbish!
  • There are creators out there, who don’t design, and who just don’t care to think. They deserve none of your business. Please, have a heart.
  • Think.

Coffee. There is soooo much more to love than the drink, alone!
Coffee pods are nowhere near like ‘a cup of coffee’. Not only are their sustainable aspects, suspect, there’s more…
They exist, and are consumed by those who ‘just don’t make time for a real coffee’.  Caffeine addicts can also be aided by a can of Red Bull! They obviously don’t love coffee, they USE it.
Proper coffee lovers have more respect. Love is recognised, and sacrifices are made! Sufficient time will always be made, in order to have a perfect brew! Fast-food outlets are ‘High Street coffee chains’. Just as FastFood/Burger-chains took over 40/50 years ago (or more), now the fashion has changed. Do you need it, or do you love it?

I hang my head in shame.
I own up, publicly, here.
Muse released their album, last week ‘Simulation Theory’.
I have not listened to it fully, as I selected individual tracks to buy. This is the fist time ever that I buy music in such a ‘broken method’.

I was disillusioned when i downloaded my first album (Radiohead’s ‘King of Limbs’). I had all of my albums on CD (copied to MP3), but Radiohead are by far my favourites, so it seemed apt to take this progressive step.
Muse definitely should be considered ‘progressive’ too.
However I maintain that albums should be bought ‘as a whole’ set of songs. I must not allow this new purchasing-method to become a regular situation.

Lauren and Ellen
The two hospital staff who are ever-so friendly, always managing to set-me into a positive mood before my physiotherapy sessions.
Thank you

Private car ban

About 85% (or more) of my journeys are made through using public-transport. I sit on a bus in a traffic jam, I ponder things. Some fellow passengers begin to get annoyed, which is fair enough. Fair enough, because I look at the traffic. Cars everywhere. Only one person-per car!
WHHAAATTTTTTT!?
I predict fairly confidently, when i see the end of motor-cars.
OK, I don’t drive, as i know of the harm that cars do to society and OUR planet, amongst a number of other reasons. Public-transport is the way forward, trust me.
No traffic jams, if we change attitudes by eliminating greed, and laziness.
Taxis, buses = yes.
Cars with sole users = Not for much longer.
Humanity will realise, eventually.

Public humiliation of an evil ****!
You've gotta love it!
After years of taking the British public for fools, and successfully causing such a mess, he faced a humiliation at 'work'!

Thank you David!

100 years.
Remember.

By wearing a red poppy, one is in NO WAY attempting to glorify anything.
It is a symbol remembrance and respect only.
Please do not create any other meanings.

Sorry about last week’s post. It proves that this blog is an accurate representation of my mind! My mind was so entangled in Sartre’s theory of existentialism, it flooded out here! I hope that I made sense (it makes sense in my head)!
I know that I regularly flip things, to view them as ‘positives’, and I definitely do this with the ‘page-view count’ of this past week (surprisingly low). Last week’s post was very different (subject-matter), which tells me that this blog is actually read correctly, by many, many of you! My usual weekly posts are concerning issues in my everyday life, I create the report, you read. This causes great satisfaction, telling me that my words are read comprehensively! Thank you!

  • So many of you view this on a mobile phone, meaning that you are missing out on my ‘right-sidebar’ (full of wonderful bits, obviously)!...
  • So I urge you to scroll to the bottom, and ‘view web version’!

My new music discovery, this week, has been a Dutch four-piece ‘Pip Blom’.

This solid rock band has been around a few years,  but recently released the driving rock sounds on ‘Paycheck EP’.
Lead song - ’The Shed’

Pip Blom - Paycheck

Past Sunday evening, saw Alessio Romagnoli (AC Milan captain, centre-back) score the only goal in his club’s clash, away at Udinese. The match was tight, the goal arriving late, 7-minutes into stoppage time. The saviour of his side 5 days earlier, at Milan’s San-Siro, versus Genoa, Romagnoli had successfully repeated his feat!

Bravo Alessio!
V Genoa 31st October (91st min, 1-2 winner)
V Udinese 4th November (97th min, 1-0 winner)
All of the centre-back’s last three goals, have been in stoppage time.

Introduced to the music style, whilst at university, I continue to feel love for it, when I am in the mood!
When in the mood, I NEED IT...
I subscribe to the ‘DeepHouseCat’ podcast, so I always have sounds ready, when needed!
Feel it. There is nothing as pure as a deep, solid, 4x4 house beat.
Music, like nothing else can attempt to match...
Have a listen... https://www.dhcat.com

Fruit juice packaging
Supermarkets seem to be stocking fruit juices predominantly in plastic bottles, stored refrigerated. These more exotic tastes may seem more appealing, but plastic bottles are becoming the norm! This is dangerous.
We must REDUCE plastic use, not increase!
Whilst we can easily recycle low-grade plastics used in milk bottles, these higher-quality, expensive fruit juice drinks remain questionable.

The unfortunate thing is, it is the fashion now.
I even spot, the worst (a mixture of both). Even some regular juice cartons, slyly include plastic windows...
The card carton may get recycled, but whilst contaminated by a permanent plastic window. This contamination will affect a whole portion of ‘cardboard recycling’.
Polymers never die.

A big issue on my mind recently...
What really happens to the material that we place in our recycle bins? I live in London, where does my ‘recycling’ go?
Wise up to waste http://www.wiseuptowaste.org.uk/recycle/what-happens-to-my-recycling/ - This may be a North London website, but ‘what happens to the things you recycle’ is an intriguing page.
Basically, it seems that the largest portion of it gets traded, heading abroad as an export.
To be totally honest, I am not sure how I feel about this. As a diplomatic, progressive individual, I cannot see a problem. It is only a FURTHER EXAMPLE, of the need for unity of countries within the world. We cannot do this alone! Britain needs other countries. Regressive, insular individuals who voted for Brexit, may be surprised by this fact.
We cannot do it alone!

I am a ‘Remainer’, but this is a shame, as it would be nice to live in a ‘closed-loop’. However, IT IS REAL. We may have tried our hardest to **** them up, but temperate climates will always vary around the world, and different foods will be produced in different places. Packaging will always be needed. Waste will always exist. We need to close this loop, PERMANENTLY!

Always dedicate time to read.  Let your brain be taken away, to a different situation. Arts allow this, but not so directly. A book can describe closely, the world to which it takes you. Your own creativity is not allowed. Instead, your mind maybe asked completely new questions, which your own subconscious would never think of asking itself. You can be forced to approach questions in a totally new way. Don’t live trapped by your own mentality, learn others!

I was enjoying listening to one of my old Cat Power albums, on CD. I had checked my hi-fi, I had good stereo sound (bass predominantly coming out the bottom speaker, her vocals were crying out from the speaker atop my shelf. Good sound :)
Then...
Half way through ‘Nude as the News’, ththththe disc was stuck skipping.
Oh man!
So I just put my iPod on. :(

Earlier in the week, I found a quote that I loved, written in basic, simple font, posted as an image on Instagram (thank you Mara). I was given permission to design a new presentation of the words…

Part of the answer.
A lifelong hero, David Millar begins to describe the weird mentality, of keen road racing cyclists. My individual, lonesome determination, are attributes that were developed as a keen cyclist. These attributes are comfortably called upon, by myself, when facing mental struggles of my current life. Cycling obviously seriously damaged me, but I know that it has given me far much more.

David Millar always speaks such sense.
Please follow the link to a long (2hour), superb interview...
Thank you David!

Stay on track

  • Stay on track Accept your fate
  • Jean-Paul Sartre - It's up to you
  • C’est la vie - 'that is wasted on me'

...............................................

    • The year is 2018, I turned 34 in August. EEEK! I have been living, brain injured for over a third of my life! I am happy with my life up to 22, from then I have been forced to live with a traumatic injury.
    • I am still happy with myself. Family and friends have proved so valuable, and i shall forever feel incredibly grateful.
    • Only I know exactly what I have been through.
    • Only I know exactly how I have tackled each problem.
    • Only I know.

It is impossible to predict the future accurately. Eleven years ago, whilst in hospital, no-one (including me) would have predicted that I would stand politically, in a local election. Twelve years (and 19 days) ago, no-one would have predicted my injury. Accidents happen.

Back in the day, I couldn’t even comprehend some of the things I can do now, therefore my self-belief remains! I remember living in hospital and both rehabilitation homes, dreaming of stages in my future life. Some exist now, some are still dreams. It is important that I recognise this!
Stay on track, follow fate’s path.
Accept this concept, or you will fall, fail and suffer miserably.

    • I am pleased with myself, for holding my beliefs strong, and standing for what I believe in.
    • Essentially, I am not ‘broken’, by the lack of ultimate success in this year’s Local Election.
    • ‘Lib-Dems’ won my ward with their leader receiving about 1700 votes, I think! I received a lot less, 160 (second, out three Greens)! This contrast may seem so large, almost comical, but I do draw immense positives from the event. A large portion of votes were in between, and it seemed that many voted by ‘Political Party’.
    • I understand and accept that our young and progressive Green Party, has a smaller following, compared to the old ‘big three’ parties. Three have successfully dominated British politics for much of the previous century (or more).
    • My strong, keen belief remains. I know that the incredibly dangerous situation that the world finds itself in, is due to the large majority of ‘closed-ears’ of older politicians. People are slowly becoming more aware of the future, and progressive politics is the way forward.

    Thom Yorke - ‘Unmade’

    • Human variety is incredibly large, but not endless. I know that I am extremely lucky, but I will forever feel different. Different, because I know that there are plenty of parts of ‘human life’ in which I can no longer participate, whilst experiencing equally as fully-able, ‘regular’ human-beings.
    • I have progressed so far, but I will always feel this gap between myself and everyone else. We are all ‘free’, but humans are required to live as ‘humanity’ expects. ‘Free’, but to what extent? Are we tricking ourselves?
    • We exist, we are ‘free’, but we have too much choice. We can never know the result of every choice, we can only hope to find our best possible result.
    • Human existence precedes our essence. We exist, therefore we are free to develop our essence, but we are limited by choices available.
    • One can conceptually design a perfect choice, but perfection cannot exist in reality. An ‘essence’ will never be perfected.

I have been reading  lot of Jean-Paul Sartre recently, deep but allowing me to draw my own conclusions, feeding from his writing.
Freedom is not a punishment, however it can be the ultimate goal, that once reached, may destroy itself.
"man first of all exists, encounters himself, surges up in the world – and defines himself afterwards"

Above, Sartre begins to explain his theory of 'existence' preceding 'essence', through his description of an artisan's paper-knife. Below, he is describing the nature (essence) of the paper-knife, before explaining that it 'serves a definite purpose' (it's essences are because of it's existence as a paper knife). However, he does continue to offer a contradiction, when offering a possible view from a 'technical standpoint', but responds by arguing that things regularly precede others - 'we can say production precedes existence.'

‘Man is condemned to be free.’
    Existentialism & Humanism
…because once thrown into the world, he is responsible for everything he does.
It is up to you to give [life] a meaning.”

The final words of the quote above, are key. It is up to every individual to give life a meaning. Every life has a meaning, each different. They are not hard to find, you just have to follow your unique path of fate.

Freedom is what we do with what is done to us.”
     Jean-Paul Sartre

    ‘That is wasted on me’…
I tried sharing my screening of my ‘Big Train DVD’, as I attempted to cheer-up a good friend.
I was in fits of hysterics, as it has been ages since I watched this old comedy. I doubt anyone finds this as comical as me, ah well.
    C’est la vie
