Welcome to my blog. I post on this, roughly once a week (it does vary). I sustained a 'Traumatic Acquired Brain Injury', and a six month coma from a 'road traffic accident' whilst cycling, in October 2006. I spent the following 4 years (22-26yrs old), in a combination of hospitals and rehabilitation homes. Now, I have been living independently in Surbiton, England since October 2010. This blog begun life in December 2010, as i realised that there are many people worldwide that i want to share experiences with. I know that, as a wheelchair user, I am obviously not as mobile as i wish, so, use the internet to connect to you. I enjoy letting my thoughts represent through type. I type honestly. As numerous readers, as well as email recipients, will understand, I find typing to be very therapeutic. Thank you :)

important message...

'This year the most important climate talks in history will take place in Paris.

Leaders from around the world will come together to decide the world’s course of action in addressing the most important issue of modern times.

Yet, despite the looming threat of a climate crisis, during this election you could be forgiven for thinking that the threat had lifted.

The truth is, politicians from the other parties simply aren’t speaking about climate change. In fact I was the only party leader to raise the topic during the three and a half hours of Leaders debates.

You and I know both know that the science is unequivocal – fortunately we have the plan to tackle the crisis.

The Green Party is the only party calling for the urgent action required and at the heart of our pledge to protect the environment is our conviction that we must also reconfigure our world to work better for people.

We will cut public transport fares – because everyone should be able to afford to get to where they want to go – and because the air pollution caused by cars is a crisis that must be tackled.

We will invest in home insulation – because no one should fear family members getting ill or even dying from the cold – and because we want to cut carbon emissions.

We will generate 80% of our energy from renewable sources by 2030 – because we know we must leave four-fifths of known fossil fuel reserves in the ground.

We are using three times as many resources as our planet can sustain - we must change course, and we can.

I, like you, want to leave a better future for our children. I want the next generation to look back on what we did at this time and think ‘my parents generation did something to protect our world’. I want them to be proud of us.

To keep climate change on the agenda and to continue our fight for social justice we must elect more Green MPs.

We can do this if we have a strong Green voice in parliament - but we need your help now more than ever with a Green vote on May 7th.

Thank you,

Natalie Benett
Leader, Green Party of England and Wales'

the four best...

I write this post in one of the many, many cafes that I rate so highly. 'Hussar's Espresso House, in Hampton Wick, is a wonderful, proud, independent cafe, deserving of so much praise.

I remain fairly amused by my own show of 'independence', whilst at work, everyone else brought to a standstill, by a power cut, and therefore a lack of computers and Wi-Fi. Perhaps this symbolises the modern-age. However, by using my iPad, linking it to my 4G phone, allowed me to do much of the work that I had planned. In-turn this scares me, proving that I have no excuses! I remained quiet!
Work crippled by power cut!

Waitrose response!
I was pleased to find a response from Waitrose, to my email sent last week (email copied into last week's post). A long email, proving that they had given me the respect of a true answer.

Within the extensive response...
"The reason the supplier does not use 100% recycled plastic is because we believe the performance and visual aspects are both enhanced."

An honest and true response that why this choice of material has been made.
No arguments.

I look in the mirror, I feel down. Eight and half years since my accident. Hmmm. I gain weight now, like never before. I blame the obvious fact that I am sitting down in a wheelchair!
Hmmm, however I know that I am picking an 'easy excuse'. My true belief was confirmed, listening to the radio this morning. It was confirmed that obesity has relatively little to do with physical action and exercise, but is predominantly reliant on what we consume in our diet.
I am in luck (i twist everything to my favour), as it seems that my new limitation of milky-coffees, is definitely  worth it. Cappuccinos and Lattes may be aesthetically pleasing and offer nice photo opportunities, but there is nothing better than a good black coffee!
I love BLACK coffee

extracts that make me smile...

I want to finish by celebrating the fact that the UEFA Champion's League has the four best performing teams in Europe, in it's Semi-Finals. There is no British team amongst, because no Brittish team can compete at high enough level. Yes, Man City, Chelsea and Arsenal are very good, but cannot condense the quality of their season-long strength, to compete with the sheer quality of a 90 minute performance by Juventus, Barcelona, Real Madrid or Bayern Munich. Good, rich, but people must realise that we are not at the level.

a load of rubbish

Nihls Frahm (click)

Hello,
I begin with good, very soothing, instrumental music that I discovered this morning, through BBC 6music. My plan is for you to listen, whilst reading this post...

My plan is such, because I attempt to relax you whilst reading my first note...
Bin bags
I have since, sent this email to Waitrose, and spoken twice on the telephone. Their very helpful customer service allow me to use the company names...

"Hello,
I want to begin by providing you with support and thanking Waitrose for the brilliance that is offered.
I was just carrying out a ‘weekly supermarket visit’, this morning, at my home Waitrose. I live in Surbiton, Surrey.
I had cited my need for some bin bags, whilst creating my shopping list this morning. For a long time, I have been very careful  as to which products are purchased depending on ethics involved. My history of working in Sustainable Design has taught me a wonderful list of moral values. This attitude has forced me to write this email.
I shop. I reach the correct aisle, and successfully locate the bin bags. At first glance, I am given a wealth of choice. A spectral array of coloured labels…

I look closer, and i am offered a range of prices, sizes, colours, however all are non-recyclable polymer! There are expensive, recyclable food bags for composting, and there are ‘garden-waste’ paper bags (hidden), but no recyclable (or recycled, or bio-degradable bin bags).
I have to buy some, so standard polymer ones are bought. I am left feeling hurt and disillusioned. There are not even any bio-degradable polymer bags. Once used, I will be littering the  earth forever (not out of choice)!

I have  to search closely to find my only choice. 15 expensive, refuse bags containing just 40% recycled plastic! You are advertising this as a positive! How is this possible? 40% means that 60%(most) isn’t! Shocking.

OK, in the afternoon, I decide to check competition. Sainsbury’s, the one other supermarket in Surbiton. I enter expecting similar news, but am overwhelmed on finding the positive attitude…

A similarly vast array of bin bags available (all on flat shelves, please excuse poor photography). Shouting at me from the middle are green boxes containing recycled plastic bin-bags (they do exist)!

I take a closer look, to find a statement on every bin bag package, that they are 100% recycled polymer.

Impressive, but not really. This shows just how poor Waitrose have been.
I am sorry to show this negative attitude. I have already warned a potential bin-bag customer, out of Waitrose and into Sainsburys. I don’t want to feel the need to do this, but I believe in good ethics.

I should also warn that I will publish this email onto my blog at the end of the week. My blog gets a small viewing, about 600 pageviews per month, but it goes public…

Will you do something about this issue. Should I delete company names from the ‘blog edition’?
Patrick Goodacre"

Afternoon:
So I went straight into original supermarket and successfully advised customers against this potential purchase!
So.... I went in search of management, and was given head office contact addresses. Email was sent, phone calls made, but...

awaiting response

A current favourite...

Shimano Dura-Ace deep rims on a Pinarello (I am surprised that Italian brand Pinarello, do not use Campagnolo?)

I survived comfortably, but was left severely angered, yet amused by my controversial reaction.
I wait at traffic lights. Cars stop. Green man. I cross.
Then
'Woah! Woah?!!'
A motorbike jumps forward, out of the traffic, into the crossing!
I look at him after exclamation. I stare at him. The boy, looks like an over-eager boy-racer. Not a proper motorbike. I didn't understand why he attempted to break the law, acting like an arrogant ****.
So I pouted my lips and blew him a kiss.

Problem. Wednesday evening, I discovered that my coffee grinder had died.
Sad story :( it had served me so well.
I go in search the next day. Time must be taken if purchasing a proper machine, so I opt for a cheaper alternative.
Manual coffee grinder - extended foreplay?
A manual grinder was bought. Cheaper, and much more semantic. I now feel much more 'part of the coffee'. A lot more romantic!

Shakespeare, wise man!

inside...

Hello! I hope the 2015 sun has found you well!
:)
A wheelchair user, wearing a smile.
This fact alarms so many. Hehehehe.
Confronted by a smiling woman, who i don't recognise, i ask...
do i know you?
‘oh, well i’ve seen you about Surbiton. It’s good that you get about, isn’t it?’
I meet a stranger, exchange smiles, but I stop, unsure of why!
Oh well, I guess that she meant no harm by using such language. However, she had successfully wiped the happy smile, from my face. I could not believe how patronising and demeaning she was being, and still she didn't realise. I am wise enough to realise that such comments were aimed at me, but she was harming me whilst building her own self-pride! ****

Ok, politics. It is time for me to begin pleading. I am scared, very scared. Everyone should be. When things become so similar, extremes will soon be found. This happens in all circles of life. Everything balances. These extremes will prove popular in a democratic society. Scary people will always exist. Scary people being given too much power, is dangerous. Hmmm... Who scares you?
Nigel Farage has claimed that he doesn't like music

Shakespeare, wiser than you think…

Short sleeves!!!

The sun has been out! I admit that I never used to be a fan of wearing short sleeves. I was always of a 'lightweight cyclist' build. I had a skinny upper body, with my legs more 'built'. Now, I have less of a psychological issue with this. I am no longer 'shy' showing arms. Although I spend ages on a gym bike machine, I am in a wheelchair, and wear shorts a lot less, now. I realise that I am now very comfortable wearing a short-sleeved shirt. I have nothing to hide!

If Sir Bradley succeeds...
This Sunday, 12th April, it returns. The 'Hell of the North', Paris-Roubaix. A cycle race, incomparable to anything else. A race of hard men, battling across northern France, over cobbles, mud, water, crosswinds and road (there is a bit, i think)! Although often dominated by Belgians such as Tom Boonen, and other continental warriors (including Fabian Cancellara), this season sees the focus of Sir Bradley Wiggins. One of the most unpredictable races, that may see victory of the British knight, could promote him as 'the greatest cyclist ever' (my opinion). With such a prestigious list of trophies in his cabinet, this honour would be hard to argue against, if added to by such a different race-winners-medal.

too fast for me!!!

Bonnes Pâques!!

I open this week by commending  Warpaint, who performed a brilliant show, last week at London's Hammersmith Apollo. I was bought tickets to a show last year for my birthday, however it was postponed by 4 months, to last week. I remember buying NME several christmas's ago, because I was captured, intrigued by these four new female faces, staring at me. on the cover. The band followed with a super initial album, 'The Fool'. Several successful festival appearances, increased their popularity further. Last year, they released their second, self-titled album, with their main single release 'Love is to die.' I am a big fan of the very tight four-piece, swirly-guitar, rock band. A great performance.

It's been a while, so I plug a few of my photos for you...
Photos for watercolour

When I am at a loose end in a cafe, I read (surprisingly rarely, actually). I have read far too many books/biographies to do with professional cycling (sympathising with many). My current read is a more abstract, philosophical book. Although written pre-war, it is  key to the 'New Thought' philosophical movement, and can be applied to modern-life in many ways.
extracts…

New Thought, US 19th century
'Your forces and how to use them' (1913) - Christian D Larsson
Perhaps, an intriguing fact for myself, is the date of writing, and my education/fanaticism of/with Modernist design.
Similar era to avant-garde art & design movements such as Italian Futurism (early modernist movement)

My issue. I have drawn a diagram to help explain my serious frustration, of these poor drivers.

Why, why, why do a ridiculously high proportion of drivers think it is ok to ignore the Highway Code, and be lazy, failing to use their indicator? This happens not only in Surbiton, but everywhere in the world! Ok, they may only be risking their own safety, but they risk me as well. I am in a wheelchair so am therefore disregarded as being able to predict traffic! I begin to feel that I am disregarded as a human being! I cross at a T-junction, that is a crossroads (more importantly). I stop, check if anyone is turning into 'my' road. No, all seems clear, but I continue to wait because a car appears at the junction opposite. No indication, leaves me to presume that the vehicle will come across the crossroads into 'my' road. I stop, continuing to wait. It is becoming the norm that now the vehicle will turn into the main road (safely, having waited for a gap), without indicating!!! I cross safely, but angered, having waited for nothing! If I had been viewed by them as an able-bodied pedestrian, maybe I will have been viewed as a standing, waiting pedestrian, awaiting an indicator...
Hmmm... I read this and panic myself. I hope that I am not too judgemental, or paranoid.
